13.–14.04 Mushroom Days
A number of highly valuable edible mushrooms and well-known medical fungi can be grown in your vegetable garden. Mushroom caps ripened on environmentally friendly substrate are tasty and healthy at the same time. The workshop is meant for fungi enthusiasts who will be able to learn how to inoculate logs with spawn and how to care for the inoculated logs. Participants will also be able to make a mushroom-growing log and take it home. In addition, advice will be shared about how to lay a mushroom bed in your garden and even how to grow a variety of mushrooms in a city apartment. The range of the mushrooms includes such valuable edible varieties as shiitake (Lentinula edodes), oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), which are more widely known in Estonia, somewhat exotic king trumpet mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii) and the most medically potent linghizi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum). This year, there is an addition to the usual selection in the form of the delicious lion’s mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus), characterised by a peculiar shape of the fruit body and broad-spectrum medicinal properties. The bitter oyster (Panellus stipticus) species with its decorating luminescent fruit body is also worth mentioning. You can expect to be able to harvest mushrooms in autumn from the logs inoculated during the master class in spring. Mushroom spawn in plugs, in grain and as liquid culture as well as tools and accessories for growing mushrooms will be sold at discount prices. Payments can be made in cash only.
The workshop is open on 13 and 14 April from 12:00 to 16:00.
12:00 – lecture on specific aspects of mushroom growing, inoculation methods and substrate types
13:30 – log inoculation starts (participation fee 15 euros; prior registration necessary)
A separate mushroom art workshop for children will be held at 12:00 by artist and designer Okeiko. Free participation for children!
Entrance fee included in the botanic garden ticket fee. The fee for preparation of inoculated logs during the workshop is 15 euros and covers a freshly cut foliage tree log prepared for inoculation, the mushroom spawn of your choice and other necessary tools to inoculate the log with the spawn on the spot. If you do not want to prepare an inoculated log during your visit, you can still ask for free information and guidelines about growing mushrooms and inoculating logs. Mushroom spawn will be sold on the spot.
