Clematis and Grapevines, 15.17.08.2025

Avaldatud: 01.08.25

From August 15 to 17, 2025, a clematis and grapevine exhibition will be held in the Conference Hall of the Palm House at the Tallinn Botanic Garden. Plants will also be available for purchase.

The colorful stars of the exhibition are clematis (Clematis), striking adornments for any ornamental garden. Clematis can be used to create enchanting arbors and decorate walls or stone surfaces. With a skillful selection of varieties, it’s possible to enjoy clematis blooms all summer long. Clematis grow naturally in many regions around the world. These unique plants can be found in the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, as well as in South America, Africa, Madagascar, Oceania, China, and Japan. The genus Clematis, belonging to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), includes 391 species of vines, shrubs, or herbaceous plants. In ornamental horticulture, clematis cultivars are highly valued, and over 5,000 varieties have been bred worldwide. In Estonia, at Roogoja Farm in Harju County, Aili and Uno Kivistik have bred over 150 clematis varieties.

Alongside clematis, the exhibition will also showcase grapevines. Just a decade ago, growing grapevines (Vitis) in our climate was considered an exciting hobby for only a few plant enthusiasts, but today, grape cultivation has rapidly gained popularity in Estonia. Several varieties have been developed that are well-suited to northern climates.

The clematis and grapevines on display come from Roogoja Farm.

Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase seedlings and locally grown grapes at the exhibition.

Entry with a regular botanic garden ticket.
