Mexican artist Amador Montes presents an art and sculpture exhibition at the Tallinn Botanical Garden
The Embassy of Mexico in Finland, concurrent to Estonia, presents the exhibition “El Otro Muro | The Other Wall| Teine Müür” at the Palm House of the Tallinn Botanic Garden, featuring the works by renowned Mexican artist Amador Montes, who will be present at the opening of the event on 3 April 2025, at 2 pm.
‘Freedom’ is the central theme of this art exhibition, in which Amador Montes examines how birds, fish, and insects can fly, swim, and walk without limitations. His artwork reflects the tendency to overlook this natural freedom by constructing imaginary boundaries. Additionally, “The Other Wall” delves into migration, a natural process for many animal species and a phenomenon that has been part of human history throughout time. The exhibition is composed of 15 artworks of mixed media on canvas and five sculptures.
“It seems to me that the Palm House of the Tallinn Botanic Garden, as an exhibition space, adds yet another nuance to the artist’s originals,” said Jaan Mettik, one of the exhibition organizers and the head of the tropical department at the Tallinn Botanic Garden. “The plants surrounding the paintings and sculptures are those that have managed to find their way out of their natural habitat and, as a result, have attained a completely different status than in their homeland—often a much more esteemed one. At the same time, they are enclosed by glass walls, meaning they are confined by entirely different boundaries than in their original home. Thus, a situation has emerged that could, albeit out of context, be described using the words of Juhan Viiding’s poem Tuisk on kolmandat päeva (The Snowstorm Has Raged for Three Days): ‘The prisoner is a little free, since the free is a prisoner,’” said Mettik.
Amador Montes resides and works in Oaxaca, Mexico. His work has been featured in notable public and private collections across Mexico, England, Spain, the United States, Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries. A dedicated artist, graphic designer, sculptor, and printmaker, he prefers to set aside logic in favor of emotions, believing that his creations emerge through happenstance. His aesthetics and artistic expression are mainly inspired by his personal life, travels, and experiences. In 2018, Forbes magazine recognized him as one of the 100 Most Creative Mexicans in the World.
The exhibition came to Tallinn Botanical Garden thanks to the Grupo Andrade Foundation, a Mexican foundation that works to improve the lives of children in vulnerable situations. The exhibition is also part of the Iberofest festival in Estonia, a series of cultural events organized by the embassies of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries to promote their culture and language.
Visitors can view the exhibition every day until 30 May in the Palm House of the Tallinn Botanical Garden.
The official opening of the exhibition is on 3 April at 2 pm, with the presence of Mexican artist Amador Montes.
